Join Joe Sumter on June 12 at 6:30 in the Lawson McGhee Library meeting room for a discussion of The Magician's Lie by Greer Macallister.
Set at the turn of the 20th century, The Magician's Lie chronicles the story of the Amazing Arden, the most prominent female illusionist in the country. Famous for her Halved Man illusion, Arden tours across the nation performing on the vaudeville circuit. While on stage in Iowa, she performs her act, trading in her usual saw for a fire ax, and later that night the body of her "husband" is found in the Halved Man prop. Suspected of the murder, she flees and is caught by local policeman Virgil Holt. Holt takes Arden into custody, and she begins to tell him of her own history leading up to that night. A fast paced thriller, this vivid and twisting historical tale blends intrigue and romance.
