If you’re looking for something to read as you remember the life of the great civil rights leader, you won’t do much better than Taylor Branch’s highly acclaimed series, America in the King years. The three-volume set published between 1989 and 2006 is perhaps the definitive study of Dr. King and the civil rights era. The first volume, Parting the waters, won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1989.
If you don’t have time to read the trilogy, you might want to try Branch’s The King years: historic moments in the civil rights movement. With excerpts from the three volumes of America in the King years, this book examines 18 pivotal moments in the civil rights movement.
