Gloria Houston

Gloria Houston

A teacher and a native of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Houston was born and raised in the Ingalls community, just outside of Spruce Pine, North Carolina . Her numerous books for children have won many awards. Among the favorites are My Great-Aunt Arizona, Littlejim, and The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree which was named a “Best Book of the Decade” by the American Library Association and published in Japanese, Korean, Swedish.

The small details make up the richness of life. This is especially true in the small communities portrayed in my books, communities closely connected to the earth and its rhythms and people who are strongly influenced by their environment and their past heritage. Without those details, the stories would be only slightly different from stories in any other setting. In my books, the cultural influence of the setting on the characters almost becomes a character itself.
