Mining Report from 1856

New to the Calvin M. McClung Digital Collection is this pamphlet from 1856 that details the minerals on lands owned by the Tennessee and Virginia Mining Company. Included are the Cranberry, Wild Cat and Ann Phipps mines in Carroll County, Virginia, near Wytheville. There is a fascinating description of the general area in addition to a more specific examination of the almost ten thousand acres owned by the company. The author also examines the processes involved in extracting the ore, the various types of ore, and the marketability of the ore.
