A captivating book from start to finish, The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen follows record-breaking racer Jessica Carlisle as she loses one of her legs in a heart-breaking accident and battles with low self-esteem. As her family struggles to pay the medical bills, her track team raises money to buy a running leg for her. They succeed, and with some practice, Jessica is out and running again. When she returns to school, she meets a math genius named Rosa, a girl with cerebral palsy. Rosa helps Jessica catch-up on her math work. To help people notice Rosa and not her disability, Jessica decides to help Rosa cross her first ever finish line. Rosa's first finish line is going to be at the River Run, a ten mile race. Thanks to her coach Kyro, best friend Fiona, and boyfriend Gavin (not to mention her family), Jessica succeeds in finishing the River Run while pushing Rosa the whole time and gains her self-confidence back.
