OverDrive news: hold redelivery

A new option for available holds in your OverDrive account—the “Deliver later” option—gives you more control over your holds. Instead of a title being automatically checked out to you when you may not be ready for it, you’ll now have a chance to delay without losing your place in line.

When a hold becomes available, you will receive a notification and have 3 days to pick up the hold. You can then borrow the hold, have it delivered later, or cancel it.

To support this feature, the automatic hold checkout feature is eliminated. You will need to manually borrow holds when they’re available.

When you choose to have a hold delivered later, you can pick the earliest possible date to receive the title, keep your place in line, and pass the copy to the next person in line. After the “deliver later” date, you will receive the next available copy.

If you forget to borrow your available title during the pickup window, your hold will automatically be set to “deliver later” as a one-time courtesy. When your hold becomes active again, you’ll receive another notification when the next copy is ready to borrow. If you take no action a second time, your hold will be canceled.

You can still use the “suspend hold” feature before holds are ready to borrow. Hold suspension lets you continue moving up on the wait list without the hold becoming available to borrow.

As a benefit of hold redelivery—besides being able to borrow and read titles when it’s convenient for you—wait lists will move more efficiently as users pass books to the next person in line.
