Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine

Known as the “mysterious shrine on the water,” Itsukushima Shrine was built in 593 CE in an area where the tides rise and fall.  Itsukushima Island itself was considered a god and the specific location was chosen to protect the god or Kami from any possible damage during construction.

Pilgrams and fishermen came to pay homage and seek protection in the Seto Inland Sea.  Today it is one of the top destinations for visitors to Hiroshima Japan.
