Built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization sometime between the 8th and 12th centuries CE, El Castillo served as a temple to the god Kukulcan. The Pyramid at Chichen Itza is thought to be the largest and most accessible site, located just west of Cancun and Cozumel on the Yucatan Peninsula. The stone terraces are adorned with carved columns with cosmological symbols and serve as a celestial observatory. Shadows form the enormous shape of a snake during the fall and spring equinox.
