We Read Y.A.!, our monthly book club devoted to teen fiction and social issues, continues its exploration of racism and police violence. Join us at our next book club meeting this Halloween, October 31, 5:00 at West High School. In honor of the new movie coming out this month, we will discuss The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Long listed for the National Book Award, Thomas' debut novel asks readers to reconsider the way we discuss the casualties of police violence, and confronts the very real challenges for young men and women of color trying to find their own voice.
Join this group of literary and civic-minded teens for a discussion of books that focus on the pressures (social, familial, and academic) faced by teens and the power to confront adversity on their own terms. Our discussions are led by Susan Groenke, award-winning professor and director of the Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature (CCYAL), West High School English teacher Stacey Reece, and Teen Central librarians. Snacks will be provided.
To make things even sweeter, Teen Central, CCYAL and the John C. Hodges Library are cohosting a free VIP screening of the The Hate U Give opening weekend on Sunday, October 21, 4:00 at the Regal Riviera 8 in Knoxville. Register today to reserve your ticket—space is limited!
